Virechana therapy at Adinath Ayurveda Hospital

What is Virechana?

Virechana is one of the five Panchakarma procedures — the classical cleansing therapies of Ayurveda. Virechana means therapeutic purgation: a controlled, fully supervised process in which aggravated Pitta is expelled from the body through the bowels, using herbal formulations. It is a medical procedure, not a home remedy, and it is done only under the doctor's supervision.

It is used for problems rooted in aggravated Pitta — recurring skin problems, constant acidity that no antacid fixes, sluggish and heavy digestion, and a feeling of toxin build-up. When Pitta has built up over years, medicines alone often cannot clear it. Virechana removes the excess Pitta itself, resetting the gut and the liver.

Virechana is never done suddenly. The body is prepared over 2–3 days first — with oleation (medicated ghee or oil) and fomentation — so the Pitta loosens and moves to where it can be expelled. Only when the doctor confirms the body is ready does the procedure itself take place.

Why Virechana?

When Pitta is deeply rooted, clearing it out works where medicines alone cannot.

Resets gut and liver function
Clearing excess Pitta helps the gut and liver work properly again — the two organs Pitta governs.
Clears the root of recurring skin problems
Many skin problems keep returning because Pitta is aggravated inside. Virechana addresses that root.
Reduces acidity at its source
Instead of suppressing acid, it removes the excess Pitta that produces it.
Classical detox
One of the five classical Panchakarma procedures, described in the Ayurvedic texts.
Done only under full medical supervision
Preparation, procedure and aftercare are all handled by the doctor and the team.

Are you facing any of these issues?

If any of these sound like you, this therapy was made for your problem.

Skin problems that keep returning despite medicines
Constant acidity that no antacid fixes
Sluggish, heavy digestion
A feeling of toxin build-up in the body
Heat, burning or irritability that will not settle
Constipation with a feeling of heaviness

Virechana is only advised after the doctor's assessment. If these sound familiar, start with a consultation — the doctor will tell you honestly whether Virechana suits you at all.

Who needs Virechana?

Virechana is only for patients where the doctor finds a Pitta-dominant disorder and confirms fitness for the procedure. It is a targeted cleansing, not a general detox, and it is never given to everyone.

Whether Virechana suits you is decided by the doctor after examination and preparation — not by the patient, and not by a package.

What's involved in a Virechana session?

A typical session lasts one full day (after 2–3 days of preparation).

1

Consultation and fitness assessment. Dr. Gaurav Sharma examines you in detail, checks your dosha through Nadi Pariksha, and confirms whether Virechana suits you and whether you are fit for it.

2

Preparation days. Over 2–3 days, your body is prepared with oleation — medicated ghee or oil — plus fomentation and a guided diet. This loosens the Pitta.

3

Procedure day. The herbal formulation is given under full medical supervision. You remain under guidance throughout the day.

4

Rest day. A day of rest with a light diet, as the body settles after the cleanse.

5

Recovery diet chart. A recovery diet chart is given, to be followed exactly in the days after.

6

Follow-up. The doctor reviews you after the procedure and plans the next stage of your treatment.

Follow the preparation and recovery diet exactly — they are part of the procedure, not optional extras.

How do Adinath experts perform Virechana?

At Adinath, Virechana is prescribed only after Nadi Pariksha and a full diagnosis, and only when the doctor is confident it is the right step. The preparation, the procedure and the aftercare are all handled by the doctor and the trained team — you remain under guidance throughout.

If at any point the doctor feels your body is not ready, the procedure is postponed — safety comes before schedule. After Virechana, the doctor plans your next treatment, because cleansing is the start of healing, not the end of it.

Benefits of Virechana

Clearer skin
Traditionally used to help recurring skin problems by clearing the Pitta behind them.
Better digestion
Resets digestion so food is processed properly instead of sitting heavy.
Less acidity
Reduces acidity at its source by removing excess Pitta.
Deep toxin clearance
Clears the toxin build-up that makes the body feel heavy and sluggish.
Liver support
Supports the liver, which Pitta governs and which carries much of the body's cleansing load.
Pitta balance
Settles the dosha behind heat, acidity, skin inflammation and irritability.
Lighter body
Patients often feel noticeably lighter and fresher after the procedure.

Is it safe? Does it hurt?

Virechana is done only after Dr. Gaurav Sharma confirms your body is ready. You remain under guidance throughout the procedure day, and the team explains exactly what to expect beforehand.

Virechana is not for everyone. Tell the doctor first if you are pregnant, severely weak, elderly and frail, or have diarrhoea or dehydration — the doctor screens everyone before deciding.

Questions patients ask

What is Virechana for?

Virechana is a classical Panchakarma procedure used for Pitta-dominant problems — recurring skin problems, constant acidity, sluggish digestion and a feeling of toxin build-up. It is done only after the doctor's assessment.

How long does Virechana take?

One main procedure day, after 2–3 days of body preparation with oleation and fomentation. A rest day with a light diet follows.

How many sessions will I need?

Virechana is usually done once in a treatment course. Whether it is repeated later is decided by the doctor after seeing your response.

Is Virechana painful?

No — it is not painful. The procedure causes frequent bowel movements during the day, and the team guides you throughout.

Is Virechana safe? Who should avoid it?

Yes, when prescribed by a qualified doctor after proper preparation. It is not advised in pregnancy, severe weakness, old age with frailty, diarrhoea, or dehydration — the doctor screens everyone first.

What do I do after Virechana?

Rest, follow the recovery diet chart exactly, take the prescribed medicines, and attend your follow-up. The diet is part of the treatment.

Can Virechana be done at home?

No — never. Virechana is a clinic-only procedure with full medical supervision, preparation and aftercare.

What should I wear or eat?

Wear comfortable clothes. Eat only what the doctor advises before and after the procedure — the preparation and recovery diets are part of the treatment.

How soon will I see results?

It varies by person and problem. The doctor will tell you what to expect at your follow-up — skin and digestion usually improve gradually over the following weeks.

Who decides whether I need Virechana?

Dr. Gaurav Sharma, after Nadi Pariksha and your diagnosis. If he feels you do not need it, it is not done.
